WILFRED NKOYO (MAJOR RET) WHY KENYANS LAG BEHIND OTHER NATIONS BOTH AT HOME AND ABROAD Dearly beloved Kenyans at home and abroad, our moment of rising from ashes of poverty and shame is here and now. The phenomenal global political Tsunami which we witnessed after US Presidential elections must inspire each of us who believe in possibilities. But such a reality will only become real to individuals who will seize the moment and run. However, it might mean little or nothing to the fearful, the faint hearted and the complacent; the idlers and busy bodies who waste their time gossiping and tearing others down. Those of us who are dreamers must be aware and stay away from such dream killers. The ‘Calebs’ must seize the moment, saying “LET US GO UP AT ONCE, FOR WE ARE WELL ABLE.” I challenge those of my fellow Kenyans at home and abroad to hunt for opportunities in spite of the so called ECONOMIC MELTDOWN. Note something unique, some of the greatest and historical multimillionaires rose in the days of the GREAT DEPRESSION OF 1929. Remember names like: Carnegie, Rockefeller, Mellon and Morgan just to mention a few, they saw opportunities in adversity. Some of the greatest and most powerful Christian Ministries also came to the forefront, with God visiting His people through a show of power and might to save, to heal and to deliver during desperate times. The biggest enemy and drawback amongst our Kenyan folks in Business or Christian Ministry, is their fellow Kenyans. Those who are trying to start and dreamers who have shared their dreams openly, will attest to this fact based on what they endure everyday. Hold your horses as I make my case! Here in USA we understand that well. Indians in Kenya and now a wave of Somalis flocking through our porous boarders have dominated the economy since independence. Indians come to America where we live by droves. They have taken ownership of almost every hotel, motel/Inn, gas/petrol stations and Convenience stores. Nigerians, Ghanaians, Ethiopians, Eritreans etc, own supermarkets and chains of other businesses in some of the largest cities in USA. They are millionaires who employ many of our Kenyans for minimal wages. So, who bewitched Kenyans or what is the problem with Kenyans? I will suggest a few reasons to which you are welcome to agree or disagree. Disunity, Envy, Jealous, unhealthy competition and mistrust plague our people; Fear to share ideas due to thieves and all other kinds of betrayal of fellow countrymen. The attitude “Why should he succeed where I have tried and failed”. The list goes on. The secret of success amongst the communities mentioned above is the exact opposite of the reasons listed in this paragraph. Most of these communities also create businesses which open opportunities for their fellow nationals, helping them to come all the way to join them in the lands of opportunities, some who cannot even speak English! Like many of you have done over the years, opening opportunities for our fellow Kenyans to join us; supported them till they stood on their own, my wife and I have had such opportunities.
